A unique gift awaits H.M. Queen Margrethe II at the opening of the Golden Days Festival in Copenhagen. Celebrating women who have had an impact on Denmark, this Friday, Golden Days Festival launches the '50 Queens' exhibition by BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group: a display of 50 pedestals at the Kongens Nytorv town square, each representing a Danish woman of historical or cultural importance.
Georg Jensen will take part in the opening ceremony of the exhibition and gift a unique necklace in sterling silver to Her Majesty, designed in collaboration with BIG and referencing the design of the exhibition.
"Our internal nickname for the 50 Queens exhibition was always "the Necklace" so it was natural for us to turn the exhibition into a real necklace, as a miniature representation of the large-scale exhibition. It will be the only physical evidence of the temporary exhibition and will thus be part of history for years to come. It has been a true pleasure working with Georg Jensen's team of designers and craftsmen to make this piece come to life," says David Zahle, BIG Partner who was co-creator on the exhibition and the necklace together with BIG Partner Giulia Frittoli.
A design to celebrate women
Hand crafted in sterling silver, the necklace features 50 elegant blocks of varying sizes, resembling the women's pedestals displayed at the town square, with the name of the exhibition "50 Queens" engraved in the largest block. Ragnar Hjartarson, Creative Director at Georg Jensen, attributes a very special meaning to the piece:
'The silver blocks can be seen as miniature pedestals, each representing a steppingstone for women in history, while the design in its entirety symbolizes the passing of time.'
He adds that the initial design idea was derived from sketches made by BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, which were then brought to life by the Georg Jensen design team - a
process well established in the company:
'Design collaborations are a long-lasting tradition at Georg Jensen - we have worked with many designers and architects, and we are proud to have had the opportunity to work so closely with Bjarke Ingels for this special occasion,' says the Creative Director, adding that this particular design is a unique piece, and no additional copies will be produced.
Copenhagen town square undergoes name change
The Golden Days Festival is set to highlight the women in history while turning the spotlight towards historic queens. In that spirit, the always-busy central town square of Copenhagen, Kongens Nytorv - The King's Square - will, during the festival, change its name to 'Dronningens Nytorv' - The Queens Square.
The he Golden Days Festival will take place from September 2nd to September 18th and H.M. Queen Margrethe II will participate in the opening of the 50 Queens
exhibition on September 2nd at 4 pm.
